Discover the Natural Park of Aiguamolls de l’Empordà
A Natural Treasure Next to Our Hotel.
What are the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà?
This is an extensive system of wetlands made up of marshes, lagoons, meadows, and coastal dunes, located between the Fluvià and Muga rivers. It was declared a Natural Park in 1983 to protect its rich biodiversity, after strong public pressure prevented its urbanisation.
The park covers more than 4,800 hectares, of which around 800 are strict nature reserves.
A paradise for birdwatchers
The park is especially known as a key stop on the migratory route between Europe and Africa. Over 330 species of birds have been recorded here, including storks, herons, flamingos, night herons, and ospreys. Many can be easily observed from the bird hides and observation towers along the park's walking trails.
Other species and ecosystems
Besides birds, the park is home to species like otters, polecats, frogs, turtles, unique insects, and a wide variety of fish. The landscape changes with the seasons: in winter, the lagoons fill up; in spring, the meadows bloom; and in summer, you can watch young birds learning to fly.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (March–June): Ideal for spotting breeding birds and enjoying pleasant weather.
Autumn (September–November): Post-breeding migration season; many species stop to rest before flying south.
Winter: Wintering birds such as ducks and herons. Fewer visitors, more peace.
Summer: Although warm, sunset walks are very enjoyable. Don’t forget water, a hat, and sun protection!
