The Most Beautiful Medieval Villages of Empordà

Go back

1. Peratallada

One of the most iconic medieval villages in Catalonia. Cobblestone streets, stone houses covered in plants, and a peaceful atmosphere make it a must-see.

Highlights: Plaça de les Voltes, the ancient moat, and hidden restaurant terraces.

2. Pals

Perched on a hill, this village offers lovely views over the Empordà rice fields. Its medieval tower, narrow streets and flower-filled balconies are postcard-worthy.

Don’t miss: Torre de les Hores and the Josep Pla viewpoint.

3. Monells

A small, picturesque village famous for its arcaded square. A perfect stop for a relaxed walk or coffee.

4. Palau-sator

Close to Peratallada, this walled village offers peace and authenticity. Entry is through a medieval tower.

5. Castelló d’Empúries

Former capital of the county, with a huge Gothic church known as the “cathedral of Empordà.” Near the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park.

6. Sant Martí d’Empúries

A small seaside village next to the ancient Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries. Rich in history and sea views.

7. Besalú

Although technically on the edge of Alt Empordà, it’s worth the visit. Its medieval bridge and Jewish heritage make it one of the top historical sites in Catalonia.

8. Cruïlles

Near Monells, with a circular medieval tower and quiet charm.

9. Vulpellac

Lesser-known, but full of authenticity. Features a Gothic-Renaissance castle.

10. La Pera

Peaceful and charming. Very close to the Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol, a great cultural stop.
